Break a Leg! is the title of the latest show from Gyles Brandreth – and it’s coming to High Wycombe next year.
The actor, author, former MP for the City of Chester and TV show panellist is bringing his latest live offering to the Wycombe Swan on April 10, 2022.
They say all political careers end in tears. In Brandreth’s case it’s tears of laughter as the actor, author, former Oxford scholar, One Show reporter and QI, Have I Got News For You and Countdown star is back on tour with his new show celebrating all things theatrical.
Without hesitation or repetition (and just a touch of deviation), Just a Minute regular Gyles will deliver a dazzling evening of wit, wisdom, high drama, low comedy, and hilarious name-dropping.
Gyles Brandreth is a writer, broadcaster, actor, former MP and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury, now Chancellor of the University of Chester and one of Britain’s most sought-after award ceremony hosts and after-dinner speakers.
A star of Celebrity Gogglebox, a veteran of QI and Have I Got News For You, a reporter on The One Show and a regular on Just a Minute, he has written many books.
These include The Oscar Wilde Murder Mysteries and three recent bestsellers: The 7 Secrets of Happiness; his celebration of good English, punctuation, spelling and grammar, Have You Eaten Grandma?; and his anthology of poetry to learn by heart, Dancing by the Light of the Moon.
The actor/broadcaster is descended from the last man to be beheaded for treason and from the inventor of a cure-all medicine Brandreth’s Pills.
He says he is proud of his notorious ancestor, Jeremiah Brandreth, but it was his great-great grandfather, Benjamin Brandreth, who was the pioneer, ending up as a state senator for New York.
Gyles’ father was descended from the eldest son, who returned to England.
When the writer/actor was in politics he says he was a hopeless radical but his diaries proved a brilliant source for his books. He published two volumes, Breaking The Code and Westminster Diaries. He also writes children’s books, novels, columns for The Telegraph and Daily Mail and biographies including one on John Gielgud.
In 2021, pandemic permitting, he is appearing on stage with Dame Judi Dench at the Bridge Theatre, on TV with Sheila Hancock in Great Canal Journeys and also presents a weekly podcast with Susie Dent about words: Something Rhymes With Purple.
Gyles will bring Break a Leg! to the Wycombe Swan in St Mary Street on Sunday, April 10, 2022, at 8pm.
Tickets are priced at £24.50 and are currently available to buy online now at www.wycombeswan.co.uk. The box office itself is still closed because of the pandemic, so please do not try to call at this time. All shows up until April 3, 2021, are suspended.
