There were dramatic scenes in a field outside Amersham yesterday - when a live grenade was dug up, prompting the arrival of the bomb squad.
John Millward was metal detecting in a field near the Harte and Magpies pub along the A355 when he made the discovery.
He immediately called Thames Valley Police and the Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal unit rushed to the scene, pitching up in the pub's car park before heading across the road into the field.
Mr Millward said the bomb disposal team explained the grenade was primed - and could have exploded at any moment.
He told the Bucks Free Press: "He said he wouldn't handle it in its condition and blew it up where I left it. Had a lucky escape by all accounts."
The bomb disposal team said it looked like a thrown but unexploded American Mk 2 grenade that was probably thrown when the fields were used for training.
