Campaigners fighting to save a 500-year-old village pub are calling on residents to help stop it from being turned into housing.

Grade-II listed The Swan pub in Ley Hill – which is believed to be one of the oldest in Bucks – is under threat from development and has been since 2018, with two previous planning applications thrown out.

But the latest plans could see the quaint pub turned into one house with parking if they are given the go-ahead.

It comes after the current owners said the pub is no longer viable and agents say turning it into a house would just be “returning the building to its original function”.

More than 100 objections to the plans have been submitted, while the Save our Swan (SOS) group is desperately trying to raise cash to buy the freehold of the pub from the owners.

Its members are calling on residents to help save the historic pub and possibly even chip in to buy it, saying in a video: “This isn’t a political issue, it’s a community issue.

“At a time when we need places for our community, now is not the time to be closing any of our pubs, let alone one that has been in Buckinghamshire for more than 500 years.

“Turning it into one house is just not an option.

“Please, if you can, help to save our Swan. Take action before it’s too late.”

They added: “We’ve set up the Save our Swan group to try and save this pub, which is a crucial part of our cultural heritage, used by local people.”

In 2018, plans to try and turn the Blackwell Hall Lane pub into a children’s nursery sparked fury from residents, walkers and cyclists who frequently visited the important community space.

There was also a backlash when proposals in 2020 tried to convert the pub into two houses – and the plans were withdrawn.
