FLY-TIPPERS who “abuse” certain natural and cultural heritage sites in Buckinghamshire have been branded ‘scum’ – with one councillor and a clean-up crew vowing to protect a dumping “hotspot”.
Desborough Castle Hillfort and an area near Spearing Road, in High Wycombe, have become favoured dumping grounds for criminals, with one online magazine for outdoor types saying it is a “constant battle” to keep clean.
One member of the Chilterns Conservation Board said they are working with Buckinghamshire Council and various other ‘guardians of areas of natural beauty’ to keep the hillfort from becoming an “open-air bin”.
While Cllr Majid Hussain, representing Booker, Cressex and Castlefield, said he is working to keep a service road behind Spearing Road from being used as the ‘town tip’.
Images taken by Cllr Hussain show discarded bicycle tyres, wooden panels, bulging plastic bags, beds and mattresses strewn next to what appears to be evidence of a recent fire.

“The issue of fly-tipping as a whole is a serious one,” said Cllr Hussain, “But my frustrations are more focused towards the service road behind Spearing Road.
“It seems that people all over High Wycombe travel to this hotspot to dump their rubbish.”
He said he has called on Chiltern Rangers and the council’s waste department to help resolve the matter.

“Not always pretty, this hillforts game,” wrote the conservation board member online. “Desborough Castle, hillfort-cum-medieval stronghold, now open-air bin.
“@ChilternsAONB #Chilforts we are working with @chilternrangers @BucksCouncil and @HistoricEngland to stop this.”
“It’s so annoying,” replied Chiltern Rangers. “Please people, don’t be lazy and abuse our natural and cultural heritage in this way. No excuses.”
“Appalling,” wrote another person. “Hope this can be stopped and the perpetrators fined.”
“Sadly, there will always be scummy people,” someone else replied. “This is not new. Carelessness has always existed – it can only be managed.”
“Infuriating – it feels like a constant battle,” tweeted The Beyonder magazine.
“Horrible,” tweeted Visit Chilterns. “Utterly selfish,” someone else replied.
In response, the council wrote: “This matter has been escalated to the relevant service area who are looking into this accordingly.”
