Three men forced their way into a house and demanded the residents handed over their phones - before realising they were in the wrong house and fleeing.
The masked men knocked on the door of a house in Millway Furlong in Haddenham at around 9.25pm on Sunday, December 13.
They forced their way inside and demanded the occupants hand over their phones.
One of the robbers then shouted that they were in the wrong house, dropped the phone they had snatched and they all left.
They are believed to have driven off in a Vauxhall Zafira.
No one was injured and nothing was stolen.
The three men were described as possibly Asian.
Two of them were wearing black balaclavas and the other had a lighter coloured camo style balaclava and a green khaki jacket.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Gary Scott, based at Aylesbury police station said: “This was an extremely frightening experience for the victim’s involved and fortunately no one was injured. I would like to reassure the local community that officers will be increasing their patrols in the local area.
“I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to get in touch.
“I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have any dash-cam, CCTV or doorbell footage from around the time of the incident."
