A group of students from a Marlow secondary school have tested positive for coronavirus.

It comes after around 60 students allegedly visited the Greek island of Zante in August, with several teenagers returning home with the illness, a concerned parent told the Bucks Free Press.

The students in question attend the Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School and are reportedly in the school’s Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13).

In a statement issued by Buckinghamshire Council, it was confirmed that those who have been diagnosed are now self-isolating and that the school is ‘clean and safe to return to’.

Anita Cranmer, Buckinghamshire Council’s cabinet member for Education and Skills said: “A group of young people and some family members have tested positive for Covid-19 over the last few days, some of whom are pupils at the same school, Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School in Marlow.

“These cases are all linked and were acquired abroad during the school holidays.

“All households are now self-isolating having been contacted by test and trace staff.

“The school is clean and safe to return to and there will be a staggered start to the school year with the older students returning slightly later to allow pupils to complete the self-isolation period.

“Public Health England are actively investigating these cases and have traced contacts to ensure that they are aware of the need to self-isolate.

“There should be no cause for wider alarm and the advice to all Buckinghamshire residents remains the same; please protect yourselves and others by observing social distancing rules, staying at home if told to do so by test and Trace and most importantly, get tested if you start showing symptoms of Covid-19.

“We thank the children and families involved for their vigilance and quick action in isolating and would urge any other Buckinghamshire residents to do the same, should any member of the household develop coronavirus symptoms or if you think you may have been in close contact with someone who’s tested positive.”

It also confirmed that TUI has halted flights to Zante after virus clusters have appeared on the island in the last few weeks.
