“Dangerous and careless” drivers have been slammed for flouting the road rules in High Wycombe town centre.

Stuart Poleszak said pedestrians are nearly getting hit by vehicles that should not be using certain roads in the town every single day.

The High Street and surrounding roads including Queen Street and White Hart Street are part of a pedestrian zone, with no access to vehicles except those with a permit.

And Church Street, outside Primark, is only supposed to be used by buses.

But Mr Poleszak says there is a “lack of control” in the area and he regularly sees dozens of cars an hour using the roads when they shouldn’t be, sometimes at high speeds – leaving him fearful that shoppers could get hit. He says he is “desperate” to get the problem sorted and has complained numerous times to Buckinghamshire Council – but a council spokesman said only police can enforce the rules there.

He said: “About 80 cars per hour in no entry and bus-only areas. This is dangerous and careless with all the pedestrians nearly getting run down every day.”

The issue has been ongoing for many years, with complaints about a “steady stream of vans and cars” going through no-entry signs on Castle Street and Church Street featured in the Bucks Free Press as far back as 2013.
