KINGSBROOK will soon see its parish council spring into life after Bucks bosses took action to get the authority up and running.

The new parish council was given the green light by the shadow authority in January – at the same meeting where councillors decided to push back a decision on High Wycombe’s town council, saying they did not want to “rush into it”.

Due to next month’s local elections being postponed, the parish council was set to go without councillors when it comes to be in May.

But to make sure residents have local representatives, Buckinghamshire Council last week took action to fill the body with councillors in the coming months.

Instead of elections, councillors will be temporarily appointed to the new parish council by chiefs from the new unitary council.

New councillors will serve until the postponed elections take place in May 2021, or sooner if restrictions are lifted and by-elections can be held.

Angela Macpherson, ward member representing Grendon Underwood, said: “This has been a big process at the old council in Aylesbury Vale, it’s come to the shadow executive with unanimous approval.

“Kingsbrook is absolutely all systems go and wants to put a lot of ideas in place.

“Delaying this for another year would not be great for the community.

“Although it’s a new estate there’s already a great community spirit going on.”

An eight-point-process is set to follow in order to appoint members to the council.

Members representing the ward on Buckinghamshire Council will be offered the opportunity to serve on the parish council first.

If some ward members do not wish to be appointed, council officers will nominate another person following discussions with group leaders.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting last week, Bill Chappel urged officers to consult with ward members as well as group leaders before nominating someone else as they are more likely to have knowledge of key figures in the local area.

Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Ashmead agreed this was the best procedure before councillors voted to go ahead with the parish council appointments at a virtual meeting on Tuesday, April 21.

Martin Tett, Buckinghamshire Council leader, said: “This is a great move forward in terms of local democracy and part of the original business case was to empower our local parish and town councils.”
