The owner of a café and bakery in Marlow has revealed how Pub in the Park has had a negative impact on her business.

Rachel Burger, who runs Burgers Artisan Bakery in The Causeway, revealed to the Free Press that despite being placed right in front of Higginson Park, business takes a hit when several festivals and events tend to arrive.

One of these events include Pub in the Park.

Speaking to the Free Press, Rachel said: “Being opposite Higginson Park does have its benefits, especially in the summer.

“But with events like Pub in the Park, you would think it would be a good event for us but it’s not.

“We’re dead.

“This is because people have been eating and drinking over there and once they’re done, they walk past us and up towards the High Street or they go towards the train station.

“We have tried doing things like selling ice cream outside as well as other stuff and it doesn’t make a difference.

“But at the same time, it’s not a big High Street so we might get people who work at the top of the High Street come down here, so there are benefits but there are people who will only go for a brand.

“That’s what they look for when they go on a High Street and some people aren’t willing to try something new and different.”

Burgers Artisan Bakery has been in Marlow since 1942 and whilst summer events in Higginson Park do take customers away from the café, Rachel revealed that, ‘business at the moment isn’t too bad’.

The owner also said that Easter and Christmas, as well as the school holidays, tend to be the busiest times of year for the business, but they also admitted that they hope business picks up soon.

Rachel added: “Being surrounded by chains does and doesn’t have an affect on us.

“I think we’re very lucky that as we’ve been here for a long time, we've got a lot of older customers who are very regular and are very loyal.

"Sometimes, we see these people every day.

“But sometimes being around the chains does have a factor as we might see some of our regulars go into another place but at the end of the day, everyone around us has got the same problem and I don’t know what the answer is.

“But I do know that it is massively important to support local businesses in your town."

Pub the Park have said: "The festival aims to work alongside local communities to minimise any potential disruption to the area.

“With increased footfall to the area as a result of the event, we undertake many local initiatives to benefit local organisations and businesses both in the run-up to and during the festival itself.

“We have heard from many bars and pubs in the town that Pub in the Park has a major positive impact on their trade.

“We would always encourage business owners to get in touch and see how they can be involved in the show.”
