A brand-new gym will open in Wycombe but it won’t be like any other.
Set up by personal trainer Hilary Spearing, the Functional Fitness Studio, which will be based on Cryers Hill, will see the PT help those suffering from illnesses and diseases such as osteoporosis, arthritis and Parkinson’s to name just a few.
She will teach the sessions based on her clients' medical, physical and mental needs and the classes will either be taught in a group or as a one-to-one.
And Hilary, who is originally from Newcastle, can’t wait to get going.
The Functional Fitness Studio will open its doors on Thursday, November 21.
She told the Bucks Free Press: “In 2017, I linked up with a scheme called ‘Active Bucks’ and ran two schemes with them and they targeted two areas of the population who were inactive: seniors and males.
“So, I organised and ran two classes for them and based the sessions on strength, balance and cardio to help them get fit.
“I did one senior circuit class and one men circuit class and they’re still going now and I’ll still be offering them in my studio.
“And what I’m doing now really happened through those clients because I got the older lot who usually come with problems.
“For example, I once had a lady with osteoporosis and another lady with arthritis, and after they said they liked what I was doing, they recommended me to other people.
“I have a client with Parkinson’s, and he has been coming to me for four years now – mainly because his wife thought he needed help with his balance and strength.
“Now, he’s strong, he doesn’t shuffle his feet and even though he does shake still, his balance and his strength are 10 times better than what it was before.
“So I just want to really help people.”
As well as the physical side of the gym, Hilary will be hoping to help those who are suffering from mental health issues, as she believes there is a direct link between exercising and mental health.
This comes after she wrote a column for the Daily Mail back in June, explaining the correlation between the two.
She also revealed that the gym will be open to any who wants to get fit.
Hilary added: “Mental health and exercise have a direct link because your mental health can improve and good feelings about yourself improve too.
“And that’s another aspect of my business, as I want to help people with health that isn’t just physical.
“I will try and include everyone who wants to exercise as I always think those who are suffering from illness can always get fit if they would like to.
“I do a circuit class on a Wednesday and we have a mix of ages where my eldest is 77 and my youngest is 34 and they come together as a group, there is a massive social element.
“We’ve gone out for Christmas lunches as we try and make a community.
“At a lot of gyms, you go in, do your workout and go home and there is no social attachment but with me, I want to create an environment where everyone knows each other.”
