Tributes have been paid to a "funny and kind-hearted" man who died after being pulled from the River Thames.

Andrew Bonner-Walter was pronounced dead in hospital after emergency services found him in the river at Bourne End Marina on Friday night.

Flowers and tributes have been left at the marina in memory of the "generous" man.

Bridget Smith, Mr Bonner-Walter's former girlfriend, said he had arrived in Bourne End in November 2016 with his "beloved" dog Bailey and his boat, Tipsy Too.

Paying tribute, she said: "He soon became one of the village characters and was often seen out and about with Bailey.

"Andrew loved his boat and was often seen on the roof of it, watching the sun set.

"Andrew was a generous, funny, kind-hearted man who had a zest for life and was always up for trying something new."

Ms Smith added that Mr Bonner-Walter travelled the world with family and work, before settling in Bedford.

He gave up his career for a time to care for his elderly mother, who has Alzheimer's disease.

Ms Smith said: "A talented writer and producer, he had a way with words that made them come to life.

"His death is a tragedy and he will be sorely missed by friends and family. The world is a duller place for his passing."

Hattie Emmett, who works at a shop in the town, added: "Andrew was a crazy guy with a heart of gold, who loved his dog, and the river Thames, his final resting place.

"He will be sadly missed.”
