One of Great Britain’s most successful Rio Olympians, double gold medallist Max Whitlock, picked up his latest golden prize in Bucks this week – a specially designed electric car.
Dozens of adoring fans queued to see the history-making gymnast in action on Tuesday, and speaking exclusively to the Bucks Free Press he revealed his big ambitions to inspire the next generation.
Hemel Hempstead-born Whitlock – who scooped two individual golds and a bronze at Rio – says life has been “pretty crazy” since returning to the UK, and was almost lost for words after picking up the keys to a brand new gold-wrapped electric Nissan Leaf at his sponsor’s Buckinghamshire dealership based in Aylesbury.
Joking about the difficulties of going to nearby shops without being noticed in his new set of wheels, the 23-year-old admits he is already having to get used to being spotted by fans, revealing that the recognition for the athletes and gymnastics as a sport has been “incredible”.
He said: “Stepping off that plane we realised we had been in a bit of a bubble in Rio.
“Coming back we didn’t realise how many people had been watching it and involved in supporting us through it, so it’s been good to come back and is good to be home.”
There has not been too much time for the gymnast to relax since his return to the UK though, and he has been involved in a number of events, performing in front of huge crowds of youngsters and speaking to them about one day emulating his success.
The athlete, who says he knows the surrounding areas in Bucks well, pointed to a growing number of clubs and opportunities for people to get involved in gymnastics.

He said: “Join a local club and get started, I’d always recommend it to anyone. Hard work, dedication, years of practice and set yourself targets. That’s my main thing that I tell people.
“I always set targets to aim for, if you haven’t got that, it’s very hard to keep going and keep motivated.”
During his trip to the Nissan showroom, Whitlock wowed the crowds by performing a few of his routines and even took the time to sign autographs.
He said: “It’s nice, because, like I say, it goes to show just how many people watched and how many people loved it.”
Talking about how he got involved in the sport, he said: “I originally did swimming and a friend from the same sports centre said I should come along and try gymnastics out.
“I did and I loved it. I got to nine-years-old and got through to the gymnastics squad for Great Britain.
“They said to me I needed to pick one or the other as I needed to give 100 per cent commitment to the sport, and obviously I’m pretty happy I picked gymnastics.”
Ever since then he has been living in the fast-lane.
But what does he really think of his new prize?
He said: “It’s pretty cool and bright. It’s a bit different – going to stand out massively – but I’m looking forward to getting it home.
“I’ve been working with Nissan for about three years now and they’ve supported me the whole way and to give me a gift for my achievements is really nice.”
