The topic of immigration is being used to “scaremonger”, Wycombe’s parliamentary candidate for the Liberal Democrats said.
At the Bucks Free Press' hustings event this week, parliamentary candidates were asked whether they would favour a points-based system when allowing immigrants in the UK.
Steve Guy advocated a “fair” immigration system and warned of the dangers of scaring people into fearing immigration.
He said: “We need a fair immigration system. It makes me sad that there is this scare mongering, these days the word immigration is banded around to scare people.
“We do not want to lurch to the right to deal with this. Don’t forget there are one million Brits living and working in other parts of Europe.”
