Artwork by a student at Amersham & Wycombe College is set to adorn a programme featuring the annual highlight of the rowing world - the Oxford v Cambridge boat race.
Alex Webb, 18, has been chosen by the public and a set of judges, to feature on the front cover of the programme for the forthcoming BNY(Bank of New York) Mellon Boat Races.
Alex, a second year Extended Diploma student, entered his work in the 2015 BNY Mellon Design Challenge competition, inviting creative students nationwide to submit their designs for a programme cover.
Beth Ring, deputy head of Creative Industries at the College, said: "This is a massive achievement for the College in a National Competition with hundreds of entries. It’s a great endorsement for the quality of our teaching and the creativity of our students."
Referring to Alex’s success, the judging panel said it was "particularly impressed by the clarity of Alex's design and appreciated the equal attention given to male and female rowers".
Alex won several prizes for his efforts, including the professional reproduction of his design in the BNY Mellon Boat Races' programme cover in April, a £1,000 cash prize, two days experience at the Royal Academy Schools and a £250 voucher for the College’s graphics department.
Alex said: "I’m over the moon. £1,000 is like a lottery win for to an 18 year old. I started experimenting with the design style last year and knew I could develop it to a good standard but I didn’t expect to win."
Look out for Alex's design on the front cover of the BNY Mellon programme for the Cambridge vs. Oxford Boat taking place on Saturday, April 11.
