Thames Valley Police said the officers involved in the death of a man in custody do still have a case to answer for, despite a conclusion of “unlawful killing” not being returned.

At the close of the inquest into the death of Habib “Paps” Ullah, which ran into its fifth week today, the 11 jurors gave a verdict of misadventure, with a narrative conclusion attached.

The narrative saw jurors answer a series of questions surrounding both the actions of the officers involved – DS Jason Liles, PC Christopher Pomery, DC Richard Bazeley, PC Howard Wynne and PC Katie Granger – as well as Mr Ullah’s behaviour.

Following the jury's conclusions, Mr Ullah's family said they will continue to fight for “justice” and have lodged civil action against Thames Valley Police.

Thames Valley Police released a statement following the conclusion of the inquest, in which they note the “long and distressing process” Mr Ullah’s family has been through. The force will also be conducting its own investigation into the five officers' conduct.

The statement read: “Thames Valley Police acknowledges the conclusion of death by misadventure with a narrative returned by a jury at the inquest into the death of Habib Ullah at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court in Beaconsfield today.

“This has been a long and distressing process for both Habib Ullah’s family and for everyone involved in the case since his death in High Wycombe in July 2008.

“Our thoughts remain with Habib Ullah’s family and friends at this difficult time and we continue to work with them and the local community.

“Thames Valley Police has determined that the officers involved do have a case to answer in respect of gross misconduct and now the inquest has concluded this will progress to a misconduct hearing as soon as possible.”
