DISILLUSIONED residents contacted me about particularly discourteous conduct from a driver in the valley. As the cortège for the funeral of Lance Winder, the tragic victim of the digger accident, was just pulling out from the house, an impatient driver, hurrying from Ragman’s Lane, blasted his/her horn at the procession and overtook it without slowing down.
Some readers have asked that such a breach of traditional values should be recorded – the driver concerned will, no doubt, recall the incident.
Previously, other residents have marked the accident by placing a large number of floral tributes on the verge outside the house.
AUTUMN sales are here again – that is to say that Joan Gilbert is preparing for a jumble sale tomorrow at 2 pm in St Mary’s.
Once again, in conjunction with Mary Blow, the proceeds will be for the Romanian children’s charity, Pro Deo, that they have both supported vigorously with jumble sale profits for a number of years.
If you can’t manage otherwise, leave saleable goods under Joan's car-port before mid-day (next along from Bernie’s butcher’s shop.) HAPPIER information comes from Marlow Jazz Club. The award winning MJQ Celebration Band provided one of the most enjoyable gigs at the club last year. By popular request they are back at the Royal British Legion Hall next Tuesday, October 14, recreating the beautiful sound of the original Modern Jazz Quartet, vibraphone, piano, bass and drums.
The brainchild of the late pianist Michael Garrick OBE, this talented group’s line-up is Nat Steele, Barry Green, Steve Brown and Matt Ridley.
Music starts 8.30pm, and pay at the door admission is £8.
AUTUMN (yes, it really is now) will probably have seen the end of a very successful harvest season, though it didn’t look earlier in the year that it would be so.
St Mary’s is holding its Harvest Festival service on Sunday at 9.30pm. Your donations of food will be handed on to the One Can Trust in High Wycombe shared with the newly formed Marlow food bank – a less than happy sign of our times.
Of course, everyone is most welcome to this traditional service.
FIREWORKS have become a major source of income for the Playing Field Committee and Friends of Burford, jointly.
This year’s show will be on Saturday, November 8, with gates open at 5.30pm and the fireworks starting around 7pm.
The Valley will once again be entertained by the multi-award-winning Star Fireworks at Marlow Bottom Fireworks Extravaganza 2014. Acclaimed as the best firework display around Marlow; always popular and often sold-out. Come with the family, enjoy the side shows, bar, food, music and, of course the amazing sky spectacular. Book early – they sold out well before the date last year.
Tickets can be bought from Marlow Tourist Office, or at Longhurst’s in Brucewood Parade. They are also available from www.marlowbottomfireworks.com. Prices are from £5 for under 13s (under fours are free), £6 for adults and £20 for a family. The website also offers discounted group tickets for two to four adults. Print your tickets from the website, or download it onto your Smart phone to show at the gate.
ANOTHER, now regular, event that tends to get sold out early is the Marlow Music Makers’ Christmas concert. It is worth getting your tickets early. The show is on Wednesday, December 3, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 at the United Reformed Church, Oxford Road, Marlow, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets, which include a glass of wine and light refreshments cost £10. They will be available from Insight Opticians, High Street, Marlow or from 01628 484618 or 01494 883392.
You will know, from my past reviews, that I have a high regard for the shows put on by MMM, so the only disappointment I could foresee is that all performances get sold out before you get yours.
REMINDERS for events you may not wish to miss starting with tomorrow which sees the Barn Club in its regularly successful celebration mode.
This time, it’s entertaining with a Michael Bublé tribute band after you enjoy a two-course dinner, all for £17.50, and I reckon you will get your money’s worth, knowing how Shelley can do a lamb shank or a poached salmon steak.
Tuesday, October 14, will be a much more decorous affair; the licensing, by the Bishop of Buckingham, of new team vicars, The Revd Graham Watts and The Revd Sami Watts. It’s at 8pm in All Saints’ Church in Marlow. Email parishoffice@marlowanglican.org for more information.
Wednesday, October 15, at 7pm in Bucks New University, is the time to report your views on your out-patient experiences.
On Friday, October 17, at 7.30pm Steve Baker, MP for Marlow Bottom, has Question Time at the Methodist Chapel.
HELP, bring me some conkers please, and I'll tell you the bad news about this year’s spiders.
