This week, we travel to the Royal Standard of England, the 900 year-old alehouse nestled away in Forty Green.

How long have you been coming here?

It must be since 1970, just after I moved here. I come here about four times a week.

What’s special about it?

I come here because of the character. It’s such an old pub and if you look around it’s lovely and time worn. That creates a certain atmosphere. They do a lot of filming here for movies.

What do you like about it?

I like to people watch, and it’s a great place for that. The food is excellent, especially the Sunday lunches.

What do you drink?

Lager or cider usually. They’ve got a good range of drinks and make their own beer at the microbrewery they have here. There’s beer festivals in the summer too.

What are the staff like?

They are brilliant, top drawer. It’s amazing the amount of work they do in a shift, you should see it on a Sunday lunchtime.

What else do you like about it?

It’s quite out of the way and cut off, but that help with the atmosphere. It’s hard to find it, so when you finally do you need a drink!
