OLYMPIC legacy funding worth £7.5m is coming to Bucks schools to help pupils enjoy PE – and now an upcoming summit will mean teachers have the chance to learn how best to use the cash.
The Bucks and MK Primary PE Conference is being held on February 12 at Stoke Mandeville Stadium with the aim of helping schools decide how to effectively use the Government funding.
Each primary school in the country is being given approximately £9,000 per annum for the next three years from the Government’s primary sports premium. The scheme is designed to build on the legacy of the 2012 London Games by helping primary schools deliver PE and sport.
The Stoke Mandeville conference, organised by Bucks Sport in association with local partners, is now open to 180 delegates from the county’s schools, with extra places for head teachers and businesses.
Schools can bring a headteacher or governor for free with one fee paying delegate. Ofsted says active participation from Governors is vital to a good assessment and taking part here will help Governors understand how to support staff.
All delegates will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with a Sochi Paralympic Torch as part of the build up to the Paralympic Flame celebrations at the beginning of March.
Sally Mapley, School Engagement Manager for Bucks Sport, described the conference as a ‘unique portal’ for primary school teachers to come and meet each other. She said: "There’s no other way of getting so many primary schools together in one place.
"This is a fantastic local chance to learn about the new ways of spending the funding that is coming into schools and make the best use of the opportunity that is going to be there for primaries over the next three years."
Ian Barham, manager of Bucks Legacy, reminded businesses to get involved: "The event is also a way of helping local Bucks companies connect with and support schools in delivering a better-value PE offer.
"There are 279 primaries in Bucks and, at £9,000 per year, the funding offer works out to £7.5m, so this conference is a great way of showing schools how to spend this money as wisely as possible and wherever possible also support local business."
Conference attendees will enjoy a series of workshops led PE experts and keynote speakers will be Annette Montague, Assistant Director of the Youth Sport Trust and Krys Kuzminska, head of Newton Longville School.
