Do you know what sin is?
For a upstanding God fearing member of the community, like my good self, it's an easy question to answer. However it seems that according to an article published recently on the website of a national newspaper lots of people think sin is to do with eating cream cakes and other unmentionables.
In fact so many people are unaware what is mean by the word 'sin' the Church of England is trialling an alteration to the christening service so parents and godparents no longer have to 'repent sins' or 'reject the devil'.
All the confusion leads me to wonder how many people know what the Devil is?
If my good self was in charge I would not change any words in the christening service instead I would start education people as to the follies of sin and the dangers of the Devil.
You may be wondering why your humble servant decided to write about this topic? Well, I think it raises an interesting insight into perhaps why there are so many problems in modern society.
It's plain for all to see that the devil and sin are inextricably linked after all it is the devil who leads the weak willed people to commit sin.
Sin is not just about eating cakes! I would say that even doing something like parking across someone's driveway or lighting a bonfire on a fine summers evening is a sin too.
Swearing is most definitely a sin together with being rude. Smoking and drinking are definitely sins indeed drink is no more than the liquid of Lucifer himself.
Let's consider someone who knowingly puts landfill refuse in a recycling bin because the black bin is full? Is that a sin too? Well, a line has to be drawn somewhere and I don't think that counts after all the real sin was cutting the weekly black bin collections in the first place.
If you upset anyone or are inconsiderate to someone then it's definitely a sin.
In truth sin has become so prolific in modern society for two reasons, firstly because the temptations of the Devil are all around and secondly because people have lost their sense of shame.
These days people are often inconsiderate to others and they think nothing of it. The 'every man for himself' attitude has become prevalent and nobody ever stops to think about the effects of their actions on others.
With the way people behave I often wonder if they know the difference between right and wrong.
What happened to the concept of 'moral values' in society?
Maybe it's time all convicted criminals had to undergo compulsory lessons in morals to try to make them understand the implication of their crimes?
Rest assured your humble servant, although not perfect, always looks back and learns from his actions in life.
Maybe if more people realised how they acted there would be less sin, the devil would be banished and the world would be a better place.
What do you think?
