VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help with a flourishing flower project in Chesham, with an action day taking place this weekend.

Work to help transform Berkhampstead Field off Vale Road into a haven for rare wild flowers during the summer months needs to get underway in winter.

A team of volunteers are needed to help cut and rake grass from the field to prepare it and allow the flowers to flourish later in the year.

The action day takes place from 9.30am-3.30pm on Sunday, January 5, and volunteers can turn up at any point. Equipment will be provided but volunteers are asked to bring a rake or fork if they have one.

Trevor Brawn from the Natural History Society said: "This is a great opportunity for the local community to come together, working to improve the very special chalk grassland flora and fauna on the Local Nature Reserve.

"We hope to have at least 20 people helping out during the day and we will remove as much of the cut grass as possible. This will reduce nutrient levels on the field, allowing plants such as orchids, scabious and knapweeds to flourish during the summer months."

The project is a joint venture between the Chesham and District Natural History Society and the landowners, Chesham Town Council, to safeguard the field’s wildlife.
