THANKS to the efforts of local communities, the beautiful decorations adorning the towns and villages in Chiltern are a wonderful reminder that the festive season is upon us.

For Chiltern District Council, it has been another challenging year, trying to support our residents in these difficult times while looking for savings. Collaborative working with neighbouring authorities has been key to reducing costs while protecting front line services. Our shared management policy with South Bucks District Council is already saving Chiltern taxpayers £660k yearly, which will increase as we go forward sharing services. The joint waste contract with Wycombe District Council is saving a further £600k a year.

In many respects, though, it is the less high profile but absolutely vital projects the council delivers in the community which demonstrate the true worth of our work in supporting local groups and organisations. The dedication and generosity of our many willing volunteers has never been so important and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them for the unstinting work they do.

I have no doubt that 2014 will provide new challenges for all of us but will also mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I – a time, perhaps, for reflecting and being thankful for what we have today.

I wish everyone a very happy Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Councillor Noel Brown, Chairman, Chiltern District Council
