It was dull and overcast at lunchtime today. Gone is the summer sun and I fear autumnal weather is well and truly nudging in.
After a short promenade around the town centre the Parish Church yard came into view and your humble servant found a bench to perch on.
It was so nice sitting there with my lunch box on full view watching the people go about their daily business.
As usual a steady stream of vans and cars were nipping through the no entry junction from Castle Street to Church Street but nobody was there to stop them of fine them.
What on earth is the point of putting up no entry signs if no penalty is imposed for breaking the restriction.
To make matters worse there are no speed bumps or traffic calming measures in the section of Church Street round to Frogmoor so buses, lorries, vans and cars can go as fast as they like making things frightfully dangerous for pedestrians.
It’s supposed to be a pedestrianised area yet the vehicle is still king and the ordinary person comes a poor second.
Walking around the pedestrian areas of Wycombe my good self often puts my life on the line dodging oncoming vehicles and its just not good enough.
Even in the High Street delivery vans come rushing through making the ordinary people rush for safety as the drivers nip through.
I wrote about this topic a week or so ago in my regular column in the printed version of the Bucks Free Press and to me it’s such an important issue that one would like to cover the topic again here.
In my opinion the pedestrianisation of the town centre back in the early 1990’s was a terrible mistake indeed we currently don't have a truly pedestrian only area so why pretend there is one at all?
Would it not be better if a one way system was introduced where by all vehicles except the biggest lorries could travel eastwards from Frogmoor down Church Street and return westwards along the High Street, White Hart Street and onwards to Frogmoor.
That way traffic would keep moving and pedestrians would only need to look one way when crossing the road.
Parking for cars should also be allowed in the High Street just like in years ago, not only would it allow people park near the shops but it would help the struggling businesses in that part of town.
Sadly in the 1990's the powers that be rushed in to follow the fashion of the time and pedestrianise our town centre but maybe now is the time to consider whether or not we still need to be pretending to ban cars from the centre of town.
Marlow High Street is open to all vehicles and the last time my good self was there it was doing very nicely in fact far better than Wycombe.
Once again Wycombe handicapped itself by banning the cars and the drivers which bring the prosperity.
Is it any coincidence the stagnation and rot set into the town when the vehicles were banned from Wycombe town centre?
It takes a brave person to turn round and say that the policies of the 1990’s were wrong but I for one am prepared to stand up and do so.
But is anyone else brave enough to agree with me and support my campaign to de-pedestrianise Wycombe town centre?
What do you think?
