It has now been over four months since half of the lanes were closed on Wycombe's magnificent Abbey Way flyover.

A plethora of traffic cones litter the once busy carriageway and three fancy electric signs flash the same notice everyday telling us the blatantly obvious.

It's been like that so long my good self is beginning to wonder if those who closed our main thoroughfare have forgotten they have done it.

Amongst the people of Wycombe it's rapidly becoming known as the Marie Céleste of highway closures after all the flyover is still running but there's no sign of any workmen.

Information about precisely what caused its closure and when it will re-open has been about as forthcoming as a Council Tax rebate indeed the closure must surely be considered as a major communications disaster.

All we have heard is the findings of the structural survey are 'still being analysed'. Surely it does not take this long to come to a conclusion?

Surely the lack of information shows a high level of contempt for the people of Wycombe.

How much are those fancy electric signs costing in hire charges and electricity costs? A simple painted sign would have sufficed and saved on costs and environmental impact of all the electricity needed to run then.

To put it bluntly this closure is a poorly managed affair and it seems there is no end to the charade.

As far as yours truly is aware we still don't know the precise reason why it was closed, how long it will remain closed or even if it will ever re-open.

We live in an age where driven by freedom of information yet it seems when it comes to the flyover closure secrecy is the order of the day. Clandestine behaviour breeds rumour and mistrust.

If the flyover re-opens fully people will ask the question 'why on earth was it closed for so long?' and if something is found to be wrong people will say 'they had to find something didn't they?'.

To put it bluntly the flyover closure and associated lack of publicly available information is a bungle in terms of public relations and only serves to build mistrust with the public.

If it takes so long to come to a conclusion then maybe it's best the examination was handed over to someone more capable who can get the job done quicker?

I for one have lost confidence in the whole closure fiasco and also in the powers that be who are supposed to be looking after the roads in general.

This is the latest in a long line of disasters to strike the roads of Wycombe which started with the removal of the roundabouts a few years ago and their replacement with traffic lights which only served to create jams and delays.

Then the re-timing of the lights at the junction of West Wycombe Road with Desborough Avenue and further along with Plomer Hill have caused major tailbacks and hampered businesses.

A whole house had to be knocked down at the junction of West Wycombe Road and Chapel Lane because of the jams caused by the re-timing of the lights at the bottom of Plomer Hill. Would it not have been quicker and cheaper to adjust the timing on the lights instead?

Perhaps it's time the running of the roads in Wycombe was handed over to another organisation who can do a better job of it?

My patience is fast running out with those who have taken away Wycombe's greatest highway asset namely our glorious 1960's flyover built in the tasteful and beautiful brutalist style.
