Deeply saddened to learn of Ward's passing. I met him back in 1992 when I acquired my first bus, an RF, and from then on we crossed paths regularly, and especially during the Classic Coaches era. It's fair to say that he helped further my own bus career quite considerably, and I also met some great people through him which I still know to this day.

To the uninitiated he could appear somewhat brusque and intolerant, but that was more down to the nature of business he was in, as I know all too well myself. Away from work he was great company, anecdotal and humorous. And you always knew where you were with him.

A proper old-school engineer, principled, hard-working, and very much appreciated and admired for both his abilities and kind nature. But beware that crushing handshake, for those hands were not quite human!

My life was considerably richer for having known him, and I shall certainly miss our occasional telephone catch-ups and every so often, crossing paths. He was a bloke's bloke, and seemingly indestructible. Which is why the news was all the more sad.

Rest in peace Ward Jones. You've certainly earned it.
