A canoe club in Marlow that has produced Olympians and Paralympians has moved to a new home.

Longridge Canoe Club, which was situated Quarry Wood Road for numerous years, is now based at Bisham Abbey.

The club closed its doors at its previous home earlier this month, but are welcoming new members at its new location.

Long-standing member, Tony Jacobs, told the Free Press: “I honestly believe that the people at the club are some the most friendly and helpful people in my life.

“I joined when I was 65 years old, I’m now 75-years-old, and they got me involved in the club.

“They are very encouraging, helpful and it’s brilliant to be part of it.”

Since its formation in 1966, the club has produced numerous successful athletes, as 17 members have gone on to compete at a national and international level.

These include Olympians Jane Rowse and Sheila Burnett who represented Team GB at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada.

Probably the most famous name to come out of Marlow, five-time Olympic gold medal-winning rower Sir Steve Redgrave, is also a member at the club.

Joining him is naturalist and TV presenter Steve Backshall, who lives in the town.

Another notable member of the club’s alumni is Jeanette Chippington.

The 54-year-old from Taplow is due to take part at her eighth Paralympic Games in Paris this summer.

She is regarded as one of the most successful athletes, winning a staggering 14 Paralympic medals.
