Wycombe Wanderers made it six games unbeaten in all competitions as they defeated Cambridge United 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Cameron Humphreys.

In the first meeting between the two sides on a Saturday since 2017, the Chairboys began the stronger and took the lead in eight minutes.

Aaron Morley’s long ball beat the United offside trap, allowing the former Jamaican international to run through on Vincente Reyes’ goal.

He could have squared it to Dan Udoh who was poised for the pass, but McCleary took the shot on and with the help of the right-hand post, Wanderers went a goal up.

It was his second of the season and his first at Adams Park since January.

Wycombe continued to look good going forward as Morley, Jack Grimmer and Cameron Humphreys tried their luck, but Richard Kone had the Chairboys’ best chance.

A Dan Harvie corner was swept into the danger zone, and the Ivorian headed just wide of Reyes’ goal.

Wanderers looked strong but were handed a real sucker punch midway through the half, as Dan Nlundulu equalised for the visitors.

His strike on 22 minutes was a real smash-and-grab as it was Cambridge’s first attack of the game.

The second period was a one-way affair as the Chairboys dominated the proceedings.

Kone.McCleary, and Josh Scowen all forced Reyes into stops, whilst Keiran Sadlier, who came on for the injured Dan Udoh, rattled the crossbar.

Bez Lubala, fresh off his four goal haul on Tuesday night against the Brighton U21s, put a glorious attempt with 25 minutes remaining wide of the target, as Wycombe continued to push forward.

And they finally found their winner with five minutes remaining, as Humphreys’ well-taken strike flew past Reyes with five minutes remaining.

The result means the Chairboys move into ninth place whilst Cambridge sit bottom of the League One table.

Up next for Matt Bloomfield’s team is Aston Villa in the League Cup on September 24.

Attendance: 4,189 (421 away).
