Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has praised the club’s former midfielder Lewis Wing ahead of this weekend’s league fixture against Reading.

The 28-year-old spent 18-months at Adams Park following his departure from Middlesborough in January 2022, where he scored 11 times in 63 appearances.

This included a run of scoring six goals in eight games between January and February this year.

Additionally, Wing was the final goal scorer of the Gareth Ainsworth era following the latter’s departure to Queens Park Rangers nine months ago, as well as bagging the last strike of Wanderers’ 2023 season.

This was in a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth where the ex-Sheffield Wednesday man smashed home an incredible 60-yard strike at Fratton Park.

However, despite being a popular figure in Buckinghamshire, he opted to move on and join Thames Valley neighbours, Reading, on a free transfer this summer.

Bloomfield said of Wing: “He was good for us in the time he was here.

“He’s a top performer at this level, and we know about the range of passing he has, how he can score goals from distance, the technical ability he possesses along with his goal threat.

“We’ve seen it first-hand on a number of occasions and I really enjoyed working with Wingy as a coach and manager here.

“He is a great guy and I have a lot of time for him.

“It’ll be good to see him again on Saturday at Adams Park."

Since moving to the ex-Premier League outfit, Wing has scored twice in 16 appearances for the Royals.

He is also expected to start at the weekend for his new club.

Speaking on his brief spell at Adams Park, Wing told the Reading Chronicle: “Wycombe means a lot to me.

“It is the club where I fell back in love with the game with the opportunity they gave me so I have no bad feelings towards them.

"I know a lot of them.

“A good friend of mine lives beneath me at my apartment so I am still in contact with him.

“They had a slow start but they started picking up results.

“I don't think they've had a good few games so they're the same as us, both fighting for three points.”
