Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield has praised the attitude and performance of Freddie Potts following his move to Adams Park.

The 20-year-old, who had never played league football before his transfer on loan from West Ham United in the summer, has featured in 16 of the club’s 17 fixtures this season, starting on 13 occasions.

He has also chalked up two games in that time against Charlton Athletic and Fleetwood Town respectively, with his attacking and defensive abilities pleasing the Wanderers coaching staff.

And Bloomfield admitted that the club ‘took a gamble’ on trying to secure his services during the summer due to the interests surrounding the central midfielder.

He told the Free Press: “I’ve been impressed with how Fred and Josh [Scowen have performed.

“Their games complement each other well and I think Fred has taken to league football brilliantly.

“I can’t ask for anymore in terms of his output.

“Despite being so young, he is so mature for his age and one thing I love about him is that he is always wanting to improve.

“There is nothing about him which gets carried away, he lives by his means and he’s a great lad who just wants to have a good career in football.

“We want to help him and we’re happy to have him.”

Before his transfer, Potts, who turned 20 in September, had only played PL2 football, whilst also featuring sporadically for the Hammers.

His five appearances in the claret and blue have come in the Football League Trophy and Europa League Conference, with the latter being won by West Ham last season.

As part of the squad, he was awarded a winner’s medal following the club’s 2-1 victory against Fiorentina in the final back in June.

Bloomfield continued: “During the summer, we didn’t realise how much recruitment we had to do in terms of the squad turnover.

“We wanted a certain type of profile to come in and because of that, we realised that we needed Premier League loans.

“And Fred is someone we have known about for a long time.

“Tommo has been watching him for a long time but we knew that we needed to be patient.

“He went to Australia with West Ham in the summer and there is always that risk when things take a bit too long.

“But we got in through a gamble and we’re delighted to have him.”

Potts is expected to start for Wycombe in their next fixture, which is away to Oxford United on October 28 at the Kassam Stadium.
