Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton believes ‘nothing’ he witnessed in his side’s 2-1 home loss against Wycombe Wanderers made him think that the Chairboys ‘are a good side’.

A header from ex-Bristol City centre back Joe Low and a well-taken Garath McCleary finish secured Matt Bloomfield's side their inaugural away league victory of the season, which was their first since April.

It was also the first time since February that Wanderers had won a competitive fixture on a Saturday, with the victory being the seventh in 11 visits to the Memorial Stadium.

However, Barton was not happy with the result and believed Wycombe used ‘old tricks’ such as timewasting to get the three points.

He told the Rovers media team after the game: “We’ve got to work on a few things before we can say we’re this promotion thinking team, but there’s nothing that I saw this afternoon [August 26], that made me think Wycombe are a good side.

“They had a game plan that set off, they ran the clock down, wasted time, all these old tricks that they are very good at.

“From our end, it’s about learning and to the greatest of respects to them, I thought we were the better footballing team.

“If I had to pay money to go and watch one of the two teams, I wouldn’t be particularly happy with lumping it the way that they do.

“They’ve done a number on us so we need to back to the training ground and get better."

At the start of the contest, Wanderers were very much on the back foot with Low’s header from a Luke Leahy free-kick on 19 minutes coming against the run of play.

It was in fact the Chairboys’ first chance of the match compared to the four Rovers had.

However, the tide turned, and Wycombe eventually found pockets of space in the back line, which allowed Brandon Hanlan to find McCleary who scored his first of the season.

Harvey Vale pulled on back for the Gas in the final few minutes, and when asked what needed to be done to convert missed chances into goals, Barton replied: “With our new stand being put in, it’s knocked out the sprinkler system so it [the pitch] couldn’t get wet.

“We managed to get some spitting as it’s rare that you’re hoping for rain.

“They’re probably the worst team to play against on a bone dry pitch with a big 5-4-1*, as they have that defensive unit.

“This is a part of our learning but I’m proud of where we are.”

In nine matches against Wycombe as manager, Barton has lost five times, drawn three and won once.
