Wycombe Wanderers right-back Jack Grimmer has admitted that the club ‘can’t keep’ clinging on to leads to see out wins during the course of the season.

The Chairboys secured their first three points of the campaign in the 3-2 victory over Leyton Orient on August 15, which ended a run of five league matches without a win.

It also lifted the Adams Park side from the drop zone to 17th.

However, the stand-in captain suggested that despite the nervy ending which saw the East London side nearly take a point back to the capital if it wasn’t for three huge saves from Max Stryjek, Wycombe are ‘getting there’ in terms of gelling as a team.

He said: “It was relief more than anything to win on Tuesday [against Leyton Orient] and I honestly believe we’re close to where we want to be as a team.

“We trust the gaffer so to repay him with a win was invaluable, especially at this moment in time as the first two games didn’t go our way at all.

“But we can’t keep doing that every game where we are clinging on at the end, that’s something we need to work on.

“It’s also the first time that I’ve been here that we’ve got six or seven players who weren’t here the year before, but the recruitment has been great as it’s like they’ve been here for a while.

“The reality is that the relationships on the pitch in a league environment, we need to gel, personalities to click and have relationships form.

“It’ll take time but we’re getting there.”

Up next for Wanderers is another home encounter, this time against Burton Albion.

The Chairboys defeated the Midlands side with ease on the opening day of the campaign last season, but lost the most recent match between the two in March at the Pirelli Stadium.

In the latter, new Wanderers striker Dale Taylor was on hand to put Albion 1-0 up in a 2-1 win.

Grimmer added: “Burton have had a tricky start so we know this will be a battle of who will come out on top and I back us to do it.

“Dale has told us a few things and it's there for everyone to see how they play and the kind of game it could be, so the old-school Wycombe grit will no doubt be needed.

“And I was buzzing for Dale when he got his goal on Tuesday because as a striker, he will get judged on his goals and for Joe, he’s been so good since coming in.”
