And then there was one.

In what has been an eventful campaign for the Chairboys, Wycombe Wanderers will end their 2022/23 season with a trip to Portsmouth this weekend.

It has been a year jam-packed with ups and downs which includes an injury crisis, a lack of goalkeepers, the departure of the club’s best player, the sudden retirement of a fan favourite, a long-serving hero departing (only to return a few months later), on top of a managerial change and an ownership increase.

But sadly, the campaign has ended with a whimper with several flat performances.

This has resulted in Wycombe missing out on the play-offs, but with a rebuilding project in process, this summer could be vital for Wanderers’ future.

So here is everything you need to know for Portsmouth vs Wycombe Wanderers.

Current form and background on Portsmouth

Similar to Wycombe, this has been an eventful yet frustrating campaign for Portsmouth.

They will finish in the top half of League One for the sixth consecutive year following their promotion back into the division in 2017, but they have only secured a play-off place in just two of those campaigns.

Like the Chairboys, they had a managerial change in the early stages of 2023, as Danny Cowley left the club.

His firing came at the end of a nine-game winless run for Pompey, which included six draws.

One of the three defeats happened to be against Wycombe back in December.

They have since hired ex-Wanderer John Mousinho as their new man in charge, and he has somewhat revitalised the south coast club.

Since his appointment in January, he has gone on to win 10 of his 22 matches in charge, with Portsmouth only losing four of their last 20 games.

They could be one of the teams to keep an eye on next season.

Current form and background on Wanderers

It has been a really disappointing end to the season for Wycombe.

Promotion was the aim back in July following last year’s play-off final defeat against Sunderland.

But the Adams Park side will have to settle with either an eighth or ninth finish in League One this campaign.

The season will end with a trip to Fratton Park – a stadium where the Chairboys have NEVER won in the league, but with this year being the year of firsts, could a win on the south coast be on the cards?

The 2022/23 season saw Wycombe win away at Barnsley for the first time, along with beating Ipswich Town and Derby County.

A feat they had never previously achieved.

Doubles over Oxford United and Peterborough United had not been completed for well over a decade, but they were accomplished in this campaign.

Portsmouth away may be a dead rubber, but it would be nice to win the season with a bit of history.
