Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield believes his side should have had a penalty in their 4-0 away loss at Ipswich Town.

With the score at 0-0 after 24 minutes, Chris Forino seemed to go down under a challenge whilst the Chairboys ventured on an attack.

The ball eventually found its way to Lewis Wing who shot wide, but Bloomfield believed the Saint Lucian centre back was fouled in the build up.

Ipswich would go on to score their opener 14 minutes later, but the 39-year-old insists that this wasn’t the reason why Wanderers lost.

The defeat leaves Wycombe five points off the play-off places, in what was the first time this season that the club had conceded four goals in a league match.

The last time that happened was in the 5-5 home draw against Cheltenham Town in February 2022.

Bloomfield said: “We had a clear penalty in the first half when Chris Forino had his legs swiped.

“It was clear.

“We also had a couple of other decisions that impacted the way the match went, and it changed the momentum.

“At 0-0, this is crucial, so I wanted to tell the referee [at full-time].

“I’m not one to have a go at officials because I know how hard their job is, and we were well beaten on the day, so this isn’t an excuse.

“When you have a penalty claim that doesn’t go for you, and when you have David Wheeler down injured and play doesn’t stop, but when one of their players goes down injured which isn’t related to the head, the play stops.

“I’m not sure why that happened but I don’t want to go into it.

“This isn’t the reason why we lost today.”

The manager will now turn his focus onto Easter Monday’s match at bottom-of-the-table Forest Green Rovers, knowing that a victory over the relegation-threatened side is needed to keep the club’s top-six dream alive.

He continued: “We react with fight, passion, and determination, things that define us as a football club, then we’ll have a chance.

“Now we need to get up and carry on.

“We have six games left and we know we have to give it our all to try and reach the play-offs.”
