Wycombe Wanderers won their first game under Matt Bloomfield as they defeated a spirited Fleetwood Town 2-0 at Adams Park.

It ends a run of two games without a win for the Chairboys as they continue to push for a play-off spot.

The midweek fixture got off to the best possible start for Wycombe as they took the lead inside the opening four minutes.

Jack Grimmer’s lofted cross was headed in by a towering Chris Fornio, who celebrated his third of the campaign and his first this calendar year.

His previous strike was against Morecambe back in October.

Wanderers were the better side during the opening exchanges as Sam Vokes, Brandon Hanlan, Lewis Wing and Nick Freeman all tried their luck, but on a cold March evening, Town’s keeper Jay Lynch was kept busy and warm, as he was forced to a flurry of saves.

The second period saw Fleetwood come out stronger as Max Stryjek was called into action.

The Pole was on hand to deny Carlos Mendes Gomes and Jack Marriott in quick succession.

It looked like the Cod Army were going to get an equaliser, but on 66 minutes, the game was settled after Vokes scored his sixth of the season.

His well-taken goal just inside the penalty area killed off any realistic hope in Fleetwood getting their first points at Adams Park since 2020.

The result means Wanderers remain in seventh but are now four points off the play-offs.

Up next is Burton Albion away on March 11.
