Gareth Ainsworth has praised Derby County boss Paul Warne ahead of this weekend’s clash at Adams Park.

The two managers have faced each other five times in the dugout since taking the reins at their respective clubs, with Wycombe achieving two wins and two draws over the current Rams gaffer.

The only defeat Wanderers have suffered at the hands of Warne was in the club’s opening Championship fixture in September 2020.

This ended in a 1-0 home loss against Rotherham United at Adams Park, with Michael Ihiekwe scoring a 94th-minute winner for the Millers.

Speaking on his counterpart, who has won 14 of his 27 games in charge since taking over in September, Ainsworth said: “He’s done fantastically well and he is a top guy.

“He and Richie Barker make a terrific team and Derby have a brilliant manager – maybe one of the best in the league and they are lucky to have him.

“It is no surprise that they are getting results and they are no doubt aiming for promotion, but we’re hoping to cause a dent in their push.”

On what his squad could bring to the match on Saturday, Ainsworth continued: “I trimmed the squad down on purpose and we have got goal scorers in the team.

“Many people would have thought that without Anis Mehmeti in the team, we would struggle.

“But last week at Port Vale, Brandon Hanlan’s goal was well taken, Garath McCleary is always a threat, and we’ve got other players like Sam Vokes, Lewis Wing, and Joe Jacobson who know where the goal is.

“We have got many matchwinners in the team.

“We know how to score goals, and I am hoping that against a Derby side that are playing really well at the moment, we can produce another brilliant display at the back.

“And if we get a result on Saturday, it will probably go down as a shock for the league, but it won’t be a shock to people here at Wycombe.

“We know what we are capable of.”
