Wycombe Wanderers completed the double over Peterborough United for the first time in 20 seasons, as the Chairboys defeated the Posh 3-0 at London Road.
A brace from Lewis Wing and a Ryan Tafazolli header gave Gareth Ainsworth’s men an important victory over their fellow play-off contenders.
The game started off brightly as both teams mustered up several half-chances in the opening 10 minutes.
First, Jack Grimmer’s strike was brilliantly blocked by Ronnie Edwards, whilst at the other end, Jonson Clarke-Harris saw his strike whisker wide via a deflection.
But the fixture’s first real bit of quality came on 15 minutes.
After Anis Mehmeti was fouled by Kwame Poku 30-yards from goal, Wing stepped up and brilliantly dispatched the set-piece for his first away goal since March.
The Chairboys sat back for the remainder of the half as they allowed the Posh to boss the ball, which saw Max Stryjek get called into action.
He was on hand to deny Ricky Jade-Jones on two occasions, whilst Poku was also thwarted by the Polish keeper.
The second period saw Wanderers go into overdrive as they put Grant McCann’s men to the sword.
Sam Vokes, who has only scored three goals all season, headed over whilst Jordan Obita saw his free-kick get pushed away by Will Blackmore.
But in the final 20 minutes, Wanderers put the game to bed with two quickfire strikes.
On 67 minutes, Ryan Tafazolli scored his first goal of the season with a close-range header against his former club, before Wing got his second with an incredible first-time screamer that struck the underside of the crossbar.
It could have been more but Blackmore was on hand to deny Wing and then Wheeler in the dying embers of the contest.
The result means Wanderers are unbeaten in three games against Peterborough this season, as they registered their first win over the Posh at London Road since May 2006.
Attendance: 7,483 (538 away)
