Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth praised his side’s 1-0 away victory at Milton Keynes but admitted ‘they are not at their full potential’ just yet.

The Chairboys deserved the win over their Buckinghamshire rivals at Stadium MK which was their first at the ground since November 2019.

It was also their win at the venue in the league since April 2010.

However, despite Nick Freeman’s brilliant strike on 40 minutes to win the match for Wanderers, several chances from Anis Mehmeti, Sam Vokes, Garath McCleary could have put the Adams Park club out of sight in the second.

Instead, MK fought back but couldn’t find a way beyond a stubborn Max Stryjek, who produced seven saves in the match.

Ainsworth said: “We don’t control the ball at times but when we do get it, you need to make it count and that’s all that matters.

“I’m proud to say that still happens in football.

“I love the ‘up and at them, the rough and tumble’ and I thought Chris Forino was brilliant.

“For such a young boy to play like he did with two experienced defenders [Alfie Mawson and Joe Jacobson] with him, and Max Stryjek at the most crucial time, produced a stunning save.

“And this isn’t me being disrespectful to our neighbours, but I thought we didn’t deserve to lose today [October 22].

“McCleary, Mehmeti and Vokes have scored a few but when they don’t fire, it’s great to have someone like Nick Freeman putting up the goals and it was a great strike.

"With the chances that we didn't take means we're not at full potential yet, and it really should have been three or four one to us.

“It was a sluggish start if I am honest as it wasn’t the best game of football, but we knew what we were doing come the second half.”

Up next is Cambridge at home on October 25.
