Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has reflected on his side’s ‘positive’ performance against Tottenham Hotspur’s Under 21s in the Football League Trophy.
In what was the inaugural game of the competition this season, the Chairboys’ match against the North London club finished goalless after 90 minutes.
It then went to a penalty shootout which Wycombe won 4-3, with Jack Young scoring the decisive spot-kick.
24 - Best chance of the contest so far! McCarthy's deep corner is volleyed towards goal by Nick Freeman, but Keeley is there to push away the effort from close range. #Chairboys #THFC #PapaJohnsTrophy

The result has given Wanderers an extra point in their group, which is also shared with League One rivals Peterborough United, and Hertfordshire outfit, Stevenage.
Speaking on the match, Ainsworth said: “We wanted to put our style onto Tottenham to see how they dealt with the high press and in the first half, I thought we did really well.
Tottenham to take the first spot kick...and it has been scored.

“We created a lot of chances, but it was just the final bit of putting in the goal, which has been a bit of an issue.
“In the second half, we tired a bit and I think there are a few boys in that team that need regular 90 minutes, and that’s hard because we have one first team game a week.
Al-Hamadi takes...and he scores!

“This year, we are trying to give the boys regular minutes so that they can get fitter and fitter as match fitness is so important.
“You need to be sharp and last, and I thought some of the boys tired a bit towards the end, which is when the game became a bit more open.
But McCarthy also misses his kick.

“I don’t think we were ever in trouble, but there were a couple of shots and a couple of breakaways you don’t want to end in a goal.
“On the flipside, Ali went through with a couple of minutes to go and he blazed it over.
And Young wins it for Wycombe! Wanderers get the extra point!
