Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has revealed that his players are having earlier training sessions due to the extremely hot weather the country is experiencing.

For the second time since July, the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe are battling increasing temperatures, with the county being placed under an amber weather warning.

Drinks breaks have been confirmed for the next round of league games as temperatures are expected to reach around 33 °C on Saturday when the Chairboys take on Shrewsbury Town.

However, despite the extreme heat, Ainsworth is happy with his squad’s preparations.

Speaking to the press, the manager said: “The lads are very professional.

“They’re hydrated and we’ll be training a bit earlier for the next couple of days to stay out of that midday sun.

“We don’t want to knock any of the strength out of the boys.

“A 3pm kick-off on Saturday when it’s going to be around 30°C, it’s going to be a scorcher, so we need to get used to it.

“This is where the sports scientists and medical professionals come into play, but it’s going to be hot for both teams and we will be preparing in the right way.”

The match against the Shrews will come four days after the Chairboys defeated Northampton Town 2-1 in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Ten changes were made to the starting 11 for the fixture at Sixfields following the club’s 3-0 away loss at Bolton a few days prior, and the manager was pleased with his team’s response.

Wycombe will now play Bristol City in the next round of the competition.

He continued: “The reaction [against Northampton] was really good.

“On Monday, we went through everything, and with the likes of Joe Jacobson, Daryl Horgan, and Chris Forino all returning to the squad, I’m really pleased and proud of this young group and they played really well.

“I really hope to integrate them into the league and get some results from them, as they are more than capable of doing that.

“These are big moments for these young kids with D’Mani getting his first goal and he linked really well with Tjay, Ali Al-Hamadi did really well in his first first-team game so I’m really pleased with them.”

Changes are expected to be made for the league outing on August 13.
