The annual Chesham Community Charity Cricket match will take place this Bank Holiday Monday.

Located at the town’s cricket ground, the family-friendly event raises money for a different cause each year, the chosen charity for 2024 being Love Lowndes.

Roughly 400 people have attended the match on a yearly basis since its inception in 2007, and one of the organisers, Waj Fayyaz, who grew up playing cricket in Chesham, hopes the upcoming event will be one to remember.

It will take place on August 26.

He told the Free Press: “Since its inception, the Chesham Community Cricket Tournament has been more than just a sporting event; it has become a cherished tradition in our town.

“Each year, local teams come together not only to compete for bragging rights but to raise funds for causes that matter to the people of Chesham.

“Last year, thanks to the generous support of participants and spectators, we raised an impressive £3,447 for Heritage House Chesham, a local charity close to our hearts.

“We want to encourage families and people all over Chesham to come over and support the event, as well as donate what they can to help this wonderful charity.

"The Quran teaches us to be good with our neighbours and a wider community, nothing gives me more pleasure when we have community-based events based in Chesham attended by all."

The charity for this year is Love Lowndes, a voluntary community group dedicated to revitalizing the playground in Lowndes Park.

The money raised will go towards improving the facilities for the children.

Mr Fayyaz continued: “As Chesham's main green space, Lowndes Park is a cherished haven for families, children, and residents of all ages. However, the existing play facilities have seen better days.

“Worn out, unwelcoming, and inaccessible, the current playground does not reflect the aspirations of our town or the needs of our children.

“Chesham's children deserve better, and we can make it happen.

“Love Lowndes has already raised £75,000 of the £150,000 needed to build a new, inclusive playground that will be a source of joy and pride for generations to come.

“By participating in this year's cricket tournament, you are directly contributing to this vital cause, helping to create a space where children can play, learn, and grow in a safe and welcoming environment.”

The event will take place at Chesham Cricket Club along Amy Lane.
