A TRAIN company has warned fare dodgers ahead of penalty fare rise set to take effect soon.  

Chiltern Railways network announced it was hiking the minimum penalty fare along new national transport consultation.

The penalty fare will increase to a minimum of £100 from Monday January 23.

If the fine is paid within 21 days, it reduces to £50 plus the price of the original full single fare.

There were plenty of ways to buy a ticket using the website, app, ticket machine or ticket, Director of commercial and customer strategy at Chiltern Railways Eleni Jordan said.

She continued: “We are committed to enforcing the new Penalty Fare system against those who travel without a ticket.

“Fare evasion means there’s less money available to improve the railway for everyone. We hope that the new system coming into place on Monday will further deter those considering travelling without a valid ticket on our network.”

The new penalty comes after a national consultation by the Department for Transport switching the country’s rail network to a £100 Penalty Fare.  

Previously those caught without a ticket faced a £20 fine or twice the full single fare to the next station.
