THE SISTER of a man, who lost his home after it sank, jumped into action to help his loved one.
Lauron Harvey and the family received devastating news on Monday saying his brother Ben’s boat had sank by its mooring by The Ferry pub in Cookham.
With the boat, Ben lost his home, life and all possessions, Lauron said.
“That’s his home. That’s his investment. Some of us might live in a house, and that’s like losing it to a house fire.
“It sank with all his possessions on, and I just felt sorry for him, “ she explained after launching a GoFundMe page, which had exceeded £6,000 in a matter of days.
Ben “absolutely loved” living on his boat called Brass Monkey, enjoying boat life and building memories with his son Dex, Lauron said.
With "dangerously high" water levels at the moment, the boat's rope became tight when Ben was away last weekend, causing the boat to tilt and let water in before it sank, Lauron explained.
Boat lifestyle passed down in the family from their grandparents, who “shared many happy years on their boats,” she explained.
With the cost of living crisis putting pressure on everyone, Ben didn’t want to bother people to ask for help.
Lauron said: “I said ‘you’ve lost your home, let me just do it’, and the response has been just amazing.
“Some people that haven’t been able to donate money they’ve done a raffle to raffle off prizes, some people have said they will give labour when the boat will hopefully taken out of the water tomorrow.
“Any way possible people are helping, even just sharing the post.
“People are going through their own hardships yet found ways to support him which is just lovely.”
Thames Valley Police were alerted to the mooring. The force confirmed on social media owner was "safe and well".
