PARENTS in Buckinghamshire were warned about ‘incredibly busy’ children’s emergency department this weekend.
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust leaders told worried parents how to help avoid overcrowding in the waiting area amid “very busy” children’s emergency department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital on Thursday and today.
Parents were asked to “attend with only one parent/carer and no siblings if at all possible.”
Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust’s Chief Nurse Karen Bonner commented the situation on Friday December 16: “The children’s emergency department, based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, is incredibly busy at the moment. Many parents are, understandably, bringing in children with concerns about Strep A.
“Parents should speak to their GP or call 111 if their child is poorly or getting worse. However, always call 999 or go to the ED if your child is having difficulty breathing, their skin, tongue or lips are blue or if they are floppy, will not wake up or stay awake.”
“There is also an increase in flu circulating in the community. The best thing everyone can do is ensure that children, as well as adults who are eligible, get their flu vaccination.
She advised people to keep warm and “take care in the ice and snow” which is forecast over the weekend, and to wear appropriate shoes to avoid slips and falls.
She added: “If you are concerned about your health please do visit http://111.nhs.uk and you will be signposted to the right care at the right place at the right time.”
