Plans to carry out major changes to Chesham’s Red Lion pub have been approved by Buckinghamshire Council.

Two new illuminated external signs displaying the Red Lion Street pub’s name can be erected at the boozer, planning officers have said.

Greene King’s plans were waived through without any objections, although Chesham Town Council said it supported comments from the highways officer that the plans were ‘underwhelming’.

As well as the new signs being fitted, an existing sign displaying beer prices is set to be removed.

In their approval of the plans, officers attached a condition stating: “The light source must be shielded such that it is not directly visible to motorists using the public highway to avoid glare, which could lead to danger to highway users.”

The new signage is part of Greene King’s plans to refurbish the Red Lion to ‘bring it to modern standards’.

The pub chain has promised to provide pizza and ‘other handheld food items’, as well as live sport, live music, pool and darts, with ‘participation in local competitions encouraged’.

A pending application for the pub submitted in 2022 originally proposed changing the name of the venue to ‘The Chesham Arms’.

The proposals also included retarmacking and reconfiguring the existing car park to include a paved seating area behind bollards and a picket fence.

Plans also state: “Above the rear seating area an open sided timber pergola is proposed, and two timber huts with corrugated tin roofs separating the seating area from the car park.”
