Two people broke into a 19th-century Buckinghamshire manor that has appeared in Christopher Nolan and Stanley Kubrick films last night.
Officers from Thames Valley Police's Aylesbury Vale team received a report that two people had broken into Mentmore Towers, near Leighton Buzzard, yesterday, Thursday, May 2.
A spokesperson for the force said break-ins were becoming a "regular occurrence" at the property, which has been in a state of deterioration for years after plans to turn it into a luxury hotel fell through.
The Grade-I listed mansion was built for the Rothschild family in the 1800s and was sold to property investor Simon Halabi in 1999, whose ambitious plans to turn it into a 171-suite hotel were rejected by local authorities.
Its once-glamorous interiors and grounds have been used as backdrops for a number of high-budget Hollywood productions including Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005) and Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
However, it has now been all but abandoned and is listed on Historic England's registry of buildings in danger of being lost to "neglect, decay or inappropriate development".
The police spokesperson said officers have been "cracking down" on the frequent break-ins and have "swiftly apprehended" those involved.
