An historic Grade II listed pub in Old Amersham is undergoing a £277,000 refurbishment starting next week.

The project, which is being carried out by Heineken-owned Star Pubs, will revitalise The Eagle on the High Street, transforming it from a tired establishment into a premium local with a great range of drinks, regular activities, and a charming courtyard garden overlooking the River Misbourne.

Michael Taylor will be the new licensee leading the charge.

Work begins on Monday, April 29 and is expected to finish by mid-June.

The refurbishment will breathe new life into the buildings, maintaining their distinctive architectural details and enhancing the overall aesthetic of Old Amersham's High Street.

Originally dating back to before the 1700s, The Eagle's history will be complemented by its debut as a refreshed and inviting location.

Particularly charming will be the walled riverside rear garden, which is being redesigned into a lovely spot to enjoy the park's views.

Expect to see improved planting, new furniture, festive lighting, and a picturesque bridge archway leading to the riverside’s recreation ground.

In a nod to local resident dog walkers, The Eagle will also host an outdoor doggy bar, providing water and treats for their four-legged friends.

In keeping with the continuity of The Eagle's charm and character, the interior will undergo an upgrade but will retain its original cosiness and snug areas.

Features such as old stone floors, wooden beams and fireplaces will be meticulously restored to reclaim their place at the heart of the pub’s appeal.

Noting the food-oriented focus of other pubs in the area, The Eagle aims to flourish as a traditional local pub where people can enjoy a fantastic selection of beverages, including cocktails, craft beers, cask ales, premium wines and soft drinks.

Michael Taylor said: "I loved having my own pub and the satisfaction of seeing people having a good time.

"I always missed it and, after many years pursuing other careers, I wanted to get back to it.

"The Eagle was the first pub I saw when I started my search.

"I fell in love with it straight away and feel lucky to have found it.

"It’s a gorgeous old pub in a picturesque setting, and people have been incredibly welcoming and friendly.

"The Eagle is in need of TLC now, but will look amazing when the works are completed.

"By all accounts it has been much-loved in the past; I want it to be an asset to Old Amersham once again.

"I can’t wait to open the doors and welcome everyone in."

Star Pubs’ area manager for Buckinghamshire, Rohan Miller added: "Michael has extensive experience in pubs and entertainment.

"We’re delighted to be joining forces with him to bring The Eagle back to life and give it the stability and investment it needs to thrive.

"The garden will be a focal point over the summer, and we’re working flat out to reopen The Eagle in time for the warmer weather and the Euros."

Taylor is also planning an array of activities such as quizzes, movie nights, live music, stand-up comedy evenings and major sports viewing events.
