ONE of the most controversial pop icons of recent years is getting shirty with a local football club.

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has put his own cash into Sunday Combination outfit Queens Head Rangers and the former Libertine star could be on the sidelines cheering on his adopted team before Christmas.

Kate Moss’ 29-year-old ex-boyfriend is a mad football fan, but his interest in a small Sunday League team in Bucks is still bizarre.

Manager Josh Morris takes up the story: “It happened around the time Queens Park Rangers were taken over. The dad of one of our players works at EMI and joked with Pete, who has supported QPR for years, about missing his chance to invest.

“He said, ‘We’ve got blue and white hoops, why don’t you sponsor us instead.

“Pete agreed straightaway.”

The condition was that the new kit feature his picture and the title of his new album on the front.

Morris said: “The first thing I thought when I saw it was, ‘that’s great, but we won’t get away with it.

“I thought we’d have to play with masking tape on our shirts, but referees haven’t said anything about it. We’ve had a lot of reaction from the opposition though, it’s riled them and we’ve had much tougher games since we’ve had the new kit.”

The big question is do Rangers play his music in the changing room now?

Morris said: “No, not yet, although I do have some of his cds.

“But if we get to a cup final or have a big game at the end of the season we will run out to Babyshambles.”
