INJURIES to some of Wycombe’s established first team stars enabled youngster Josh Scowen to make his debut today.
The midfielder entered the fray just as injury time was about to start, with striker Scott Rendell saying it was just desserts for some excellent showings for the club’s second string.
He was joined on the bench for the match at Morecambe by fellow youngsters Kadeem Harris and Matt McClure after Matt Bloomfield was ruled out through a hamstring problem and Ben Strevens didn’t travel north due to a throat infection.
Rendell said: “Josh has done really well in the last three to four weeks. We’ve played a couple of reserve games and he’s probably been the best player on the pitch.
“It’s great to see him come out and get his chance because he will be a big player for this club if he carries on doing what he’s doing.
“They are all good players and have good futures in front of them.”
Manager Gary Waddock added: “It was nice for him. He’s done extremely well recently.
“It was good for Kadeem to see his mate get his debut. I believe his parents were here as well, they made the long trip journey up. It was well worth it for them.
“He [Scowen] has come up and trained with the first team regularly and done extremely well. His performances in the reserves recently have been good.”
Wanderers tradition demands the youngster had to get up and sing in front of the rest of the first team squad at the team hotel the night before.
Rendell revealed Scowen sung Adele’s ‘Someone like you’, with Harris also stepping up to the mic to entertain his team-mates with “a really high-pitched version of Matt Cardle”.
The striker laughed: “I’ve not heard that one before, it was interesting.
“It’s always hard doing that but they take to it well and fair play to them.”
