The M40 has been closed northbound from High Wycombe junction 4 to Stokenchurch junction 5.
A Liquified petroleum gas vehicle caught fire just before 3pm, with reports of delays of over an hour for motorists.
It was extinguished around 3.30, but firefighters asked for the road to be closed whilst the car cools.
The Highways agency said it expects the road to reopen at 5pm.
A diversion is in place on the A4010 New Road through High Wycombe and on the A40 between High Wycombe and Stokenchurch.
