A huge sinkhole which left residents in a sleepy south Bucks village stunned, has grown in size.
Shop owners have spoken of their shock after an area of collapsed pavement in Straight Bit, Flackwell Heath, which has steadily become bigger, appeared a few weeks ago.
Chepping Wycombe Parish Council, which covers Flackwell Heath, confirmed it does not own the land and the Bucks Free Press have been unable to contact the owners.
Siva Nadarajah, whose newsagents is directly opposite the sinkhole, said he was worried his shop could collapse if it gets any bigger.
He said: “This is the second time it has happened. The last time was about a year ago.
“Everybody asks why nothing is being done about it.”
The sinkhole has now been cordoned off with a large metal cage.
Belinda Helsdown, who works at Betfred, said it had been there for a long time and that it was “about time they did something”.
She said: “A few people have commented that they think it’s going to spread. I was quite shocked when I first saw it, it’s a bit of a talking point at the moment.
“People are still going about their daily business but it’s a good thing they’ve put the higher cage around it because of the children.”
Maria Stone, who has worked at Woollcotts Dry Cleaners for 20 years, said the sinkhole has been helping business, as more people are coming to look at it, and in turn, visiting the shops.
She said: “They’re all coming in, asking about it. They’re saying it could be something to do with the fact that they used to make kiln bricks here, that it’s all hollow underneath.
“It is a bit of a worry but we haven’t lost any business from it.”
