Wycombe in the running to be named 'Britain’s Crappest Town'

Wycombe has been named alongside the likes of Milton Keynes, Luton, Merthyr Tydfil, Grimsby, Maidenhead and Slough in the 100 town list.

Surprise contenders include Oxford, York, Mayfair, Chipping Norton and Burnham Market in Norfolk.

Residents nominated their town for inclusion in the soon-to-be-released book Crap Towns Returns – Back By Unpopular Demand.

The book’s co-editor Sam Jordison said: “Crap comes in many forms.

“Very often the kind of towns that estate agents would describe as 'desirable' are the most stultifying, the most ugly and the most unpleasant to live in. They also tend to be full of the most ridiculous people.

“Our correspondents don't like Mayfair any more than they like deprivation and squalor.

“In fact, they often finger the affluent places as the cause of all the trouble in the first place. Or at least, for failing to do anything about it and for having terrible, terrible pubs."

Residents are now being urged to either stand-up in defence of Wycombe or explain why it should be included as one of the worst places in the country.

You can make Wycombe’s case for or against inclusion in the book by filming a tourism video using the videofy.me app and sharing it on Twitter using the hashtags #craptown or #notacraptown, followed by High Wycombe.

Released in 2003, Crap Towns: the 50 Worst Places to Live in the UK, dubbed "the Doomsday Book of misery", sold more than 100,000 copies.
